(Protocol summary only for purposes of this preview site)When an animal's life is to be taken, it should be as painless and free of distress as possible. Euthanasia should result in a rapid loss of consciousness followed by cardiac or respiratory arrest and, finally, the loss of brain function. The technique selected should endeavor to minimize any distress and anxiety experienced by the animal before its loss of consciousness.
